Camp Knot a Phe, organized by the Arizona Network for Allied Disorders (ANPAD) in collaboration with the Phoenix Children's Hospital metabolic team, once again proved to be a remarkable event for metabolic patients and their families. Held in May, this camp welcomes approximately 200 attendees to the beautiful 40-acre campsite just outside of Prescott, AZ, nestled amidst tall pines.

The main goal of Camp Knot a Phe is to provide a unique family camp experience for metabolic patients who are currently on a protein-restricted diet with medical formula. In addition, PKU patients undergoing treatment with Palynziq were also warmly welcomed. This inclusive approach ensures that families facing similar challenges can come together, share their stories, and build lasting connections.

From the moment campers arrived on Friday, it is clear that a memorable weekend awaits them. Check-in begans at 3:00 pm, with an early bird check-in option available at 2:30 pm. The day kickss off with a delicious dinner served at 5:30 pm, followed by a campfire and s'mores party that brings smiles to everyone's faces.

Throughout the weekend, Camp Knot a Phe offers a diverse range of activities suitable for all ages. Everyone enjoyed exciting actives such as archery, arts and crafts, rock climbing, zip-lining, horseback ridding, canoeing, and the exhilarating giant swing. For those seeking even more adventure, canoeing proves be a popular choice. The camp dance is always a hit with campers of all ages, creating a fun and energetic atmosphere that celebrates the spirit of togetherness.

In addition to the recreational activities, the camp also features a Vendor Fair and  optional discovery groups and workshops. These sessions allowed participants to delve deeper into educational topics related to genetics, recipes, and helpful tips and tricks for managing their conditions. Last year Nurse Kara's talk on "Learning All About Your Phe Level Tips & Tricks" garnered significant interest and participation. Following that, Supraja Prakash led a thought-provoking discussion on genetics, fostering a greater understanding of metabolic disorders.

One of the highlights of Camp Knot a Phe is the field games, which ignited the competitive spirit among kids, parents and adults alike. Last year's chalk war on the field was a joyous event that brought bursts of vibrant colors and laughter to the campgrounds. The sense of camaraderie and friendly competition added an extra layer of excitement to the entire weekend.

Another beloved tradition that returned last year was the famous Dutch Auction and lip sync battle. These activities allowed campers to showcase their talents, express their creativity, and build cherished memories together. These lighthearted events encouraged everyone to step out of their comfort zones and enjoy a good laugh.

Of course, no camp experience would be complete without delicious meals, and Chef Kent and his team from ASU once again delivered. They prepare a variety of low protein meals that amazed everyone with their culinary expertise. The collaboration between ASU's culinary students and the genetics department of Phoenix Children's Hospital showcases the power of teamwork and dedication. It's worth mentioning that the ASU culinary students participating in this program can earn college credit for their involvement, making it a win-win situation for everyone.

Camp Knot a Phe owes its success to the selfless efforts of numerous volunteers. The Phoenix Children's Hospital genetics doctors, dietitians, nurses, and patient care coordinators dedicated countless hours of their free time to ensure the smooth operation of the camp. The ANPAD board members, who are all volunteers, aways instrumental in making this year's camp even better than the last. Their unwavering dedication and tireless efforts have made this camp a reality year after year. Their commitment to serving the metabolic community is truly inspiring, and without them, Camp Knot a Phe would not be possible.

The sense of community and support at Camp Knot a Phe is unparalleled. It is a place where lifelong friendships are forged, where families find solace in knowing they are not alone in their journey, and where lives are genuinely improved. The connections made at camp extend far beyond the weekend, as families continue to lean on each other for guidance and support long after they have packed up their tents and returned home.

The impact of Camp Knot a Phe extends far beyond the individuals who attend. It is a beacon of hope and a symbol of unity for the entire metabolic community. The bonds formed at camp serve as a reminder that no one has to face these challenges alone. Together, we can overcome obstacles, support one another, and celebrate the resilience and strength that resides within each and every one of us.

We are grateful for the opportunity to be part of such a remarkable community, and we cannot wait to see what the future holds for Camp Knot a Phe and the metabolic patients and families it serves.

We Care,

ANPAD
